A furnace problem can turn serious fast in a Grand Junction winter. Some issues can wait for a regular service visit. Others put your safety or your home at risk. Knowing the furnace emergency repair signs helps you act quickly. Here are five signs that mean you should call for help right away.
1. Your Furnace Blows No Heat
No heat on a freezing night is more than a comfort problem. Indoor temperatures can drop quickly, and pipes can freeze. Young children, older adults and people who are ill face the most risk. First, check the simple things. Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and has working batteries. Check that the furnace switch is on and the breaker has not tripped. Look at the air filter too, since a clogged filter can shut some systems down. If the heat still will not come on, call for emergency service.
2. You Notice a Burning Smell
A faint dusty smell is common the first time you run the furnace each fall. It should fade within an hour or so. A strong burning or electrical smell that lingers is different. It can point to overheated wiring or a failing motor. Turn the furnace off at the thermostat and call for repair.
A rotten egg smell is a separate warning. It can signal a gas leak. Do not flip switches or use anything that could make a spark. Leave the home right away. From outside, call 911 or your gas utility. Call us for repair only after the area is declared safe.
3. You Hear Loud or Strange Noises
Every furnace makes some sound. Soft clicks and the hum of the blower are normal. Loud banging, screeching or grinding are not. Banging at startup can point to delayed ignition. Screeching often comes from a worn belt or motor bearing. Grinding can mean a part is close to failing. Turn the system off if the noise is loud or getting worse. Running it longer can turn a small repair into a big one.
4. Your Furnace Short Cycles
Short cycling means the furnace turns on and off every few minutes. It never runs long enough to warm your home. A dirty filter, an overheating system or a faulty flame sensor can cause it. Short cycling wears out parts and wastes energy. It can also mean the furnace is shutting itself down for safety. Change the filter first. If the cycling continues, call a technician.
5. Your Carbon Monoxide Alarm Goes Off
Treat a carbon monoxide alarm as a true emergency every time. You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide. It can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and confusion. High levels can kill. Do not try to find the source yourself. Get everyone, including pets, out of the home right away. Call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Stay out until responders say it is safe to go back in. Then have the furnace inspected before you run it again.
Stay Safe While You Wait for Help
Keep the furnace off if you noticed a smell, a loud noise or an alarm. Use safe backup heat, such as extra blankets. An electric space heater can help if you keep it away from bedding and curtains. Never use a gas oven, grill or camp heater to warm your home. These can release carbon monoxide indoors. Open cabinet doors under sinks to help protect your pipes from the cold.
