Electrical emergencies happen fast: a sparking outlet, a burning smell, a sudden loss of power. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can protect your family and your home. Here’s a simple guide to staying safe until help arrives.

First: Know When to Call 911

If there are flames, heavy smoke, or someone has been shocked or injured, get everyone out and call 911 immediately. Don’t try to fight an electrical fire with water, which conducts electricity. Your safety comes before anything else.

Immediate Safety Steps

For electrical problems that don’t involve fire or injury, follow these steps:

  1. Shut off power at the breaker if it’s safe. If you know which circuit is affected, turn off that breaker. If you’re not sure, or the problem is serious, switch off the main breaker. Don’t approach the panel if it’s sparking, smoking, or standing in water.
  2. Don’t touch exposed or damaged wiring. Assume any exposed wire is live. Keep children and pets away from the area.
  3. Stay away from water. Never touch outlets, appliances, or the panel if you’re standing in water or the area is wet.
  4. Unplug devices if it’s safe. If an appliance or device is sparking or smells hot, unplug it only if you can do so without touching damaged cords or wet surfaces.
  5. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. A Class C or multipurpose ABC extinguisher is designed for electrical fires.

Common Electrical Emergencies

Sparking or Burning Outlets

Stop using the outlet, turn off the breaker for that circuit, and call an electrician. Sparks and scorch marks usually point to loose connections or damaged wiring.

A Burning Smell

A burning or hot-plastic smell with no obvious source may be coming from wiring inside a wall, an outlet, or your panel. Turn off power if you can identify the circuit, and call for help right away.

Sudden Power Loss

Check whether your neighbors have power. If they’re out too, it’s likely a utility outage, so contact your power provider. If only your home has lost power, or only part of it, check your panel for a tripped breaker. If a breaker won’t reset or trips again immediately, leave it off and call an electrician.

Downed Power Lines

Stay at least 30 feet away from any downed line and assume it’s live. Call 911 and your utility company. Never try to move a line yourself.

Water Near Electrical Equipment

If water has reached outlets, appliances, or your panel, don’t enter the area. Shut off power at the main breaker only if you can reach it safely from a dry location.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t keep resetting a breaker that trips again right away
  • Don’t use water on an electrical fire
  • Don’t touch someone who is being shocked; cut the power first
  • Don’t attempt DIY repairs on damaged wiring or your panel

How to Prepare Ahead of Time

  • Label every breaker in your panel so you can find the right one quickly
  • Make sure adults in the household know where the panel is and how to shut off the main breaker
  • Keep a flashlight with fresh batteries somewhere easy to find
  • Test smoke and CO detectors monthly
  • Save an emergency electrician’s number in your phone

When to Call an Emergency Electrician

Call an electrician right away if you notice sparks, burning smells, warm or buzzing outlets, a breaker that won’t reset, or a power loss limited to your home. These problems can get worse quickly, and some can lead to fires inside walls where you can’t see them.
